John Owan Enoh, Nigeria’s Sports Minister, stated that the country is utilizing diplomatic means with Italy in reaction to Napoli football club’s mockery of Nigerian footballer Victor Osimhen.
He expressed being “saddened” by the news of the incident and added that the government would prioritize protecting the welfare of its sports stars. The club had shared a video on their TikTok account depicting Osimhen missing a penalty while having a high-pitched sound dubbing it “gimme penalty please”.
There was a lot of backlash due to which they deleted the post however, the player’s representative warned that legal action may be taken against them.
On Thursday, Napoli released a public statement saying that the visual was created using “expressive language used in a light-hearted and playful manner” as well as they never meant to displease or make fun of Osimhen who was an asset to their club.
