The German Government has welcomed the decision to name imprisoned Iranian women’s rights activist Narges Mohammadi as the Nobel Peace Prize winner.
“Ms Mohammadi’s award is representative of all Iran’s courageous women who stand up for equal rights and human rights,’’ said Germany’s deputy government spokeswoman Christiane Hoffmann in Berlin on Friday.
“The awarding of the prize is an important signal of global solidarity with the courageous people in Iran and a signal to the Iranian regime to respect the rights of its citizens.’’
Mohammadi is one of the best-known human rights activists in Iran and has already been imprisoned several times.
The 51-year-old is currently serving a long prison sentence in the notorious Evin prison in Tehran.
